When I invited readers to ‘ask a healthcare analyst’, friend of the list Russell wrote in with a great question (emphasis mine):

I’d like you to talk about software generated cost estimates for known diseases and procedures.

We have the data, and we also have the data on complications and variations. There is no reason why an estimate can’t be generated and the patient percentage of costs can’t be given ahead of time. When a patient knows what the out of pocket costs will be, they can make decisions and “shop around” for non-emergency procedures.

This is a perfect example of a “We can’t do THAT???” problem.

Healthcare is full of “We can’t do THAT???” problems.

In this short (18 minute) podcast, Hyunmin and I dive into the details of what makes the seemingly-straightforward problem of price transparency so impractical in healthcare today.
